Harrier and Jaguar
Animal Tattoos

The present 2010 Duveen Commission, by Fiona Banner.

The suspended Sea Harrier transforms machine into captive bird, the markings tattooing its surface evoking its namesake the Harrier Hawk. A Jaguar lies belly up on the floor, its posture suggestive of a submissive animal. Stripped and polished, its surface functions as a shifting mirror, exposing the audience to its own reactions. Harrier and Jaguar remain ambiguous objects implying each captured beast and fallen trophy.
[From the Tate website]

Both planes are de-commissioned fighter planes.
The Jaguar has been polished, the Harrier painted with feathers.

Jaguar
This particular plane is Sepecat Jaguar XZ118.
First flight in 1976, decommissioned in 2006.

The SEPECAT Jaguar is an Anglo-French jet ground attack aircraft, used by the RAF till 2007.

Ripostery No. 20 : Beauty is in the Eye
Animal Tattoos

As soon as once again, I’m a week late in uploading… this week’s will be up in moments…

Crow mentioned: &quotMy very first thought when I received Sharon’s &quotInspire&quot photo for this week was to catch the south end of a northbound Steller’s Jay, an straightforward resolution. My second believed was Skunk’s lovely and distinctively banded &quotraccoon tail,&quot also an easy solution. Okay, with two fall-backs in my mental kit bag, I decided to hold my eyes out during the remainder of the week.

By Thursday morning, I was starting to feel a bit frustrated and these &quoteasy outs&quot had been looking significantly less and significantly less attractive. Then I went to town, and a stroke of pure genius hit me: guys impressing girls. I hoped I’d see some muscle-bound Schwarzenegger-kind, bare-chested, tattooed, standing next to a Hummer or a hot tiny sportscar. No luck. I don’t know any of the guys up at the climbing shack properly adequate to ask them to take their shirts off, so that was out as effectively.

In the dark of night, the Muse paid me a second visit. &quotThe answer,&quot she said, &quotis in your really personal cupboard. Beauty is in the eye.&quot This morning, out came the fly-tying kit and the peacock herl, and Mother Nature supplied up a little bit of all-natural light to comprehensive the equation.

The moral of the story is: Quit trying to force it, you knothead!&quot

I was so pleased with Crow’s response. I was honestly expecting an animal tail of some sort – with Crow’s talent for photographing birds, I believed it would be a cinch. How could I have identified that she would have a peacock feather ready to shoot?

Octubre

The faces of the women are not tattooed, except that now andthen they have a black line on the upper lip, which is very suggestiveof a budding mustache. A single quite lady was pointed out to us whowas said to be the daughter of a chief her hands and arms have been tat-tooed, the tattooing on the arms extending almost to tlie elbow. At alittle distance she seemed to have on a pair of embroidered gloves, and 56 THE BOY TRAVELLERS IN AUSTRALASIA. this truth suggested an idea. Why could not the ladies of civihzed landshave their hands tattooed in imitation of gloves, and hence save them-selves the problems and expense of donning a new pair so often ? Aningenious artist could do it nicely, and he may well even tattoo the buttonsin their places, so that the gloves could have no possible possibility of slip-ping off or getting out of shape.

Circles, squares, and all sorts of curious figures had been delin-eated on his skin, and then punctured in with the tattoo instrumentand the artist certainly possessed a right eye, as all the drawing wasmathematically precise.
