This is the continuation of a photo-project that I began in the summer season of 2008 (which you can see in this Flickr set), and continued all through 2009, 2010, and 2011 (as shown in this Flickr set, this Flickr set, and this Flickr set): a random collection of &quotinteresting&quot folks in a broad stretch of the Upper West Side of Manhattan — in between 72nd Street and 104th Street, especially along Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue. These are the folks in my neighborhood, aka &quotpeeps in the ‘hood.&quot

As I indicated when I very first started this project almost four years ago, I don’t like to intrude on people’s privacy, so I generally use a zoom telephoto lens in order to photograph them while they are still 50-one hundred feet away from me but that means I have to continue focusing my interest on the people and activities half a block away, rather than on what is appropriate in front of me. Occasionally I locate an empty bench on a busy street corner, and just sit quietly for an hour, watching people hustling past on the other side of the street they’re practically constantly so busy listening to their iPod, or talking on their cellphone, or daydreaming about anything, that they never appear up and see me aiming my camera in their path.

I’ve also learned that, in several circumstances, the opportunities for an fascinating picture are very fleeting — literally a matter of a couple of seconds, just before the individual(s) in query move on, turn away, or stop undertaking what ever was exciting. So I’ve discovered to hold my camera switched on, and not be concerned so much about zooming in for a perfectly-framed image … after all, as soon as the digital image is uploaded to my pc, it is quite trivial to crop out the parts unrelated to the main topic. Certainly, some of my most fascinating images have been so-referred to as &quothip shots,&quot where I never even bother to raise the camera up to my eye I just hold the zoom lens set to the maximum wide-angle aperture, point in the general direction of the subject, and take several shots. As lengthy as I can hold the shutter speed relatively high (which sometimes needs a pretty high ISO setting), I can usually get some pretty crisp shots — even if the subject is walking in one particular path, and I’m walking in the other direction, while I’m snapping the images.

With only a handful of exceptions, I’ve usually avoided photographing bums, drunks, crazies, and homeless men and women. There are lots of them about, and they would certainly produce some dramatic pictures but they normally don’t want to be photographed, and I never want to really feel like I’m taking advantage of them. There have been a few opportunities to take some &quotsympathetic&quot photos of such people, which may possibly inspire other folks to attain out and aid them. This is a single instance, and right here is one more example.

The other thing I’ve noticed, whilst carrying on this project for the previous 4 years, is that even though there are lots of fascinating people to photograph, there are far, far, far much more men and women who are not so interesting. They’re possibly fine folks, and they may even be far more fascinating than the ones I’ve photographed … regrettably, there was just absolutely nothing memorable about them. They’re all component of this huge, crowded city but for greater or worse, there are an awful lot that you will not see in these Flickr sets of mine…
