(From Wikipedia)

The Pink Terraces, or Otukapuarangi (&quotfountain of the clouded sky&quot) in Maori, and the White Terraces, also known as Te Tarata (&quotthe tattooed rock&quot), have been organic wonders of New Zealand. They have been lost, and for long following have been believed to have been fully destroyed, by the 1886 eruption of Mount Tarawera, becoming replaced by the Waimangu Volcanic Rift Valley.

The Pink and the White Terraces had been 800 metres apart. The White Terraces have been at the north finish of Lake Rotomahana and faced away from the lake at the entrance to the Kaiwaka stream. They descended to the lake edge 40 metres beneath. The extra sunlight they received from facing north gave them a more bleached or white look. The Pink Terraces had been about two thirds of the way down the lake sheltered from the harsh sun on the western shores, facing south-east. Their pink look (near the colour of a rainbow trout) was largely due to less sunlight reaching them and for that reason significantly less bleaching.

In the game Second Life, I play the avatar Juushika Redgrave.

I was in something of a rather pissy mood, with is excuse sufficient for me to dress up in black. This dress is new from Bare Rose, and I love it&#151and when you adore something at Bare Rose, the value is so reasonable that you may well as well purchase it. The skirt has a very good balance of sculpted poof and natural flexi, and undoubtedly tends to make the outfit in my eyes. It could simple be dressed up, but I took far more of a undesirable-humored middle road in between grunge and goth: thick black boots (extremely low cost, anything like 15L, at Creator’s Pavilion), a spiked bracelet from Encore, a graceful necklace from Paper Couture, and a silky black mask from Illusions. I chose really messy buns from ETD (modded to cover method ears) and modded my shape a bit for narrow eyes and a frown. It suited my mood, and as a pleasant bonus I really like the appear.

2011: What I Heard

A few good Star Tattoos photos I discovered:

2011: What I Heard
Star Tattoos

Of the several, several issues about my life that have changed in the final 12 months (hi there, New York two new tattoos? Certain!), there is a single small, simple modify that has had the most profound effect on me.

It really is the difference between telling an individual &quotI shoot concerts&quot and telling them &quotI used to shoot concerts.&quot I utilized to do a lot of factors in my life–I employed to play the flute, I utilized to date guys I should not, I utilised to have lengthy hair, I employed to collect Star Wars trading cards. But when I stopped doing all these items, it was because I grew out of them, or they just weren’t some thing I felt was specifically critical anymore. But concerts? Live music? A year ago, you’d have had to pry my camera out of my cold, dead hands, the finger still twitching reflexively on the shutter, to get me to willingly stop taking photos of musicians on stage. Or, as it turns out, you just have to supply me a job in yet another city with a night schedule that tends to make going to concerts a virtually not possible luxury.

So this year, I’m celebrating the shows I saw, because somehow by way of it all I managed to see and shoot some amazing musicians this year. I did it because it is essential to me, and I did it because apparently I get twitchy if I do not. I produced the time to do it, sacrificing sleep, holiday time and sobriety, simply because standing about in a area full of 500 sweaty people watching a group of even sweatier men and women singing their hearts out is anything I just really like to do.

5: Dismemberment Strategy, 9:30 Club, January
For about four days last January, the D in D.C. stood for Dismemberment. We ALL went to the one of the shows, and The City felt like it was on a unified mission, and that mission was to have a fucking celebration. I went to the Sunday night show at 9:30 and stood on the balcony, surrounded by people I knew. I’ve frequently described this night to folks as the explanation I ultimately decided to move to New York, since as I stood up there gripping the rail, it felt like I knew everybody there. I loved that spot simply because of that, and I necessary to move since of that. Here’s a clip of the Ice of Boston at the end of a single of those shows. One particular. Massive. Fucking. Celebration.

four: Weakerthans, Bowery Ballroom, December
The Weakerthans committed each of their 4 nights at the Bowery to a single of their major albums I took the two in the middle as getaway days from function and lived a sleep-coffee-bowery-sleep-repeat schedule for two days. Right after months of no shows at all, these two nights created me really feel typical once more. Here’s a version of “Reconstruction Website,” the title track for Evening No. two. And here’s John K Sampson all by his lonesome, getting quirky and Canadian and waxing slightly-much less-than-poetic-but-no-much less adorable about Occupy Wall Street prior to launching into “One Great City.”

three: Avett Brothers, DAR Constitution Hall, February
I wrote this show up for We Love DC, and also got to shoot it for them, and almost everything Deep and Meaningful (and Long and Rambly) that I have to say about the Brothers Avett you can locate there. With the advantage of 10 a lot more months’ reflection, I’ll just add: The Avetts sing in “Head Complete of Doubt/Road Complete of Promise” that you must “decide what to be and go be it.” If that night at D-Strategy was a single of the reasons I moved to New York this year, that Avetts line was one particular of the factors that got me thinking about it in the very first place. Here’s a slightly cruddy version of that song from that evening (included largely so you can see Joe Kwon ROCKING the hell out of that cello). And here’s “I and Really like And You” from the night, due to the fact it’s basically gorgeous.

two: Middle Brother/Dawes/Deer Tick, 9:30 Club, March
This was my really last night as a DC resident. I got to invest it shooting Dawes. With out the usual very first-three-only limitations–I had the Complete show, correct up at the stage, no rail. I wrote it up for We Adore DC, and I’m accomplished utilizing words to try to convince each single individual I know to listen to Dawes and Middle Brother (and Deer Tick now, as well, due to the fact this year’s album sold me on them), due to the fact they’ve heard it all ahead of. This was most likely the single greatest concert encounter I had in Washington, DC. It almost certainly would have been the greatest show I saw this year, but for …

1: The National, Beacon Hall, December
Yeah, that is right. I’m placing The National ahead of MIDDLE BROTHER. ME. I’m carrying out that. That’s how excellent this show was. This is the precise moment I was fully committed to the decision that this show–their very first of six in a row at the Beacon–is the very best I’ve ever noticed. I was quite a lot currently there thanks to this one particular, though. And this one. I’d constantly liked the National somewhat passively, and I lucked into a photo pass since I have remarkable buddies who have remarkable sisters, so going into the night I was just jazzed to SHOOT again. Glad to know the guidelines, glad to do one thing I’m great at, glad to attempt my hand at some thing I’d been obtaining rusty at. And them BAM, out of nowhere (nicely, actually, straight out of Bryan Devendorf’s drumkit), a band I’d often kinda sorta liked on studio albums became the band that put on the greatest reside show I’ve ever observed.

Nowadays is Dec. 29. You know what I’m performing tomorrow, on the second to final evening of the year? Going to a concert.

A couple of nice Bear Tattoos pictures I found:

Plungefest 2011
Bear Tattoos

On January 29, 2011, Particular Olympics Maryland, the Maryland State Police, and a number of other organizations as soon as once more held a polar bear plunge at Sandy Point State Park close to Annapolis, where people ran into the Chesapeake Bay to raise funds for Particular Olympics. This year, the occasion was called “Plungefest”, and celebrated the 15th anniversary of the occasion.

Unlike the 2010 event, exactly where the final plunge of the day was cancelled due to a snowstorm in progress for the duration of the occasion, dropping numerous inches of snow across the state, in 2011, the climate cooperated. While a considerable snowstorm, comprehensive with “thundersnow“, did hit the state earlier in the week, causing treacherous road conditions and widespread power outages, by the time the weekend rolled about, the snowstorm had passed, the roads had been cleared, and most of the power outages had been eliminated, and the polar bear plunge occasion was run to its conclusion. Nevertheless, the snowstorm did leave the beach covered with a layer of snow, reinforcing the point that this was indeed a winter event, and the water was cold. The nicer weather also meant that, unlike last year when the ongoing snowstorm forced me to stow my main camera, the Canon, and switch to “Duckie”, my waterproof camera, I was in a position to photograph with the Canon, with greater image top quality as a outcome.

The day consisted of three main events: the initial plunge at 1:00 PM, a VIP plunge at two:00 PM featuring Joe Flacco from the Baltimore Ravens, and then the second plunge at 3:00 PM. The greatest change to the occasion in 2011 was that the polar bear plunge was now an alcohol-free event. Previously, the occasion had contained a “beer tent“, where individuals could obtain and consume adult beverages. This was eliminated in 2011 for security causes, as occasion organizers determined that cold-water swimming mixed with alcohol was a dangerous mixture.
