Harrier and Jaguar
Animal Tattoos

The present 2010 Duveen Commission, by Fiona Banner.

The suspended Sea Harrier transforms machine into captive bird, the markings tattooing its surface evoking its namesake the Harrier Hawk. A Jaguar lies belly up on the floor, its posture suggestive of a submissive animal. Stripped and polished, its surface functions as a shifting mirror, exposing the audience to its own reactions. Harrier and Jaguar remain ambiguous objects implying each captured beast and fallen trophy.
[From the Tate website]

Both planes are de-commissioned fighter planes.
The Jaguar has been polished, the Harrier painted with feathers.

Jaguar
This particular plane is Sepecat Jaguar XZ118.
First flight in 1976, decommissioned in 2006.

The SEPECAT Jaguar is an Anglo-French jet ground attack aircraft, used by the RAF till 2007.

Ripostery No. 20 : Beauty is in the Eye
Animal Tattoos

Left : Snark AKA DeForestRanger AKA Crow

As soon as once again, I’m a week late in uploading… this week’s will be up in moments…

Crow mentioned: &quotMy very first thought when I received Sharon’s &quotInspire&quot photo for this week was to catch the south end of a northbound Steller’s Jay, an straightforward resolution. My second believed was Skunk’s lovely and distinctively banded &quotraccoon tail,&quot also an easy solution. Okay, with two fall-backs in my mental kit bag, I decided to hold my eyes out during the remainder of the week.

By Thursday morning, I was starting to feel a bit frustrated and these &quoteasy outs&quot had been looking significantly less and significantly less attractive. Then I went to town, and a stroke of pure genius hit me: guys impressing girls. I hoped I’d see some muscle-bound Schwarzenegger-kind, bare-chested, tattooed, standing next to a Hummer or a hot tiny sportscar. No luck. I don’t know any of the guys up at the climbing shack properly adequate to ask them to take their shirts off, so that was out as effectively.

In the dark of night, the Muse paid me a second visit. &quotThe answer,&quot she said, &quotis in your really personal cupboard. Beauty is in the eye.&quot This morning, out came the fly-tying kit and the peacock herl, and Mother Nature supplied up a little bit of all-natural light to comprehensive the equation.

The moral of the story is: Quit trying to force it, you knothead!&quot

I was so pleased with Crow’s response. I was honestly expecting an animal tail of some sort – with Crow’s talent for photographing birds, I believed it would be a cinch. How could I have identified that she would have a peacock feather ready to shoot?

At times our fellow New Yorkers do not actually look like New Yorkers

This photo was taken Broadway, at 87th Street on the Upper West Side

So let’s attempt to figure out what’s going on right here. The reality that this guy has his dog on a leash and is taking him out for a walk gives me the impression that he lives right here (as does his dog).

And if he lives right here, then he’s a New Yorker. (You do not have to live right here for ten years to get that title it takes place correct away).

As for the hat … effectively, New Yorkers put on all kinds of funny issues on their head.

But what’s the strange thing he’s wearing over his shirt? A sweater (on a warm summer time day)? A poncho? It really is not the sort of point you would count on a New Yorker to put on — nor is the weird shoulder-bag some thing I’ve ever noticed just before.

And the dog has a kerchief around his neck. What’s that all about?

And then there are those blue Crocs …

Well, anyway, one of the nice items about living in New York is that you can dress any old way you want — and no one pays much attention. So, hopefully this guy and his dog are satisfied …

Note: I chose this as my &quotphoto of the day&quot for Jul 26, 2013.

***************

This set of images is based on a really straightforward concept: walk every single block of Manhattan with a camera, and see what takes place. To avoid missing anything, walk each sides of the street.

That is all there is to it …

Of course, if you wanted to be a lot more ambitious, you could also walk the streets of Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and the Bronx. But that’s much more than I am willing to commit to at this point, and I will leave the remaining boroughs of New York City to other, more adventurous photographers.

Oh, really, there’s one particular a lot more tiny detail: leave the photographs alone for a month — unedited, untouched, and unviewed. By the time I really concentrate on the very first of these &quotevery-block&quot photographs, I will have taken far more than eight,000 images on the nearby streets of the Upper West Side — plus yet another several thousand in Rome, Coney Island, and the different spots in NYC where I traditionally take pictures. So I don’t expect to be emotionally attached to any of the &quotevery-block&quot photographs, and hope that I will be in a position to make an objective choice of the ones worth searching at.

As for the criteria that I’ve utilised to pick the modest subset of each and every-block pictures that get uploaded to Flickr: there are three. Very first, I will upload any photo that I think is &quotgreat,&quot and where I hope the reaction of my Flickr-pals will be, &quotI have no idea when or exactly where that photo was taken, but it’s truly a terrific picture!&quot

A second criterion has to do with location, and the third requires time. I am hoping that I’ll take some photos that clearly say, &quotThis is New York!&quot to any person who appears at it. Clearly, certain landscape icons like the Empire State Developing or the Statue of Liberty would satisfy that criterion but I am hoping that I will discover other, a lot more unexpected examples. I hope that I’ll be capable to take some shots that will make a &quotlocal&quot viewer say, &quotWell, even if that’s not recognizable to a person from one more portion of the nation, or an additional part of the globe, I know that that is New York!&quot And there may well be some photographs exactly where a &quotnon-regional&quot viewer may possibly say, &quotI had no notion that there was anyplace in New York City that was so intriguing/beautiful/ugly/spectacular.&quot

As for the sense of time: I keep in mind wandering about my neighborhood in 2005, photographing different shops, shops, restaurants, and enterprise establishments — and then casually hunting at the pictures about 5 years later, and being stunned by how significantly had changed. Little by tiny, store by shop, day by day, things adjust … and when you’ve been about as long as I have, it’s even much more remarkable to go back and appear at the photographs you took thirty or forty years ago, and ask yourself, &quotWas it actually like that back then? Seriously, did folks truly wear bell-bottom jeans?&quot

So, with the expectation that I will be seeking at these each-block photographs 5 or ten years from now (and perhaps you will be, also), I’m going to be carrying out my ideal to capture scenes that convey the sense that they were taken in the year 2013 … or at least sometime in the decade of the 2010’s (I have no notion what we’re calling this decade yet). Or perhaps they will just say to us, &quotThis is what it was like a dozen years after 9-11&quot.

Film posters are a trivial example of such a time-specific image I’ve currently taken a bunch, and I do not know if I will ultimately choose that they’re worth uploading. Women’s fashion/designs are an additional clear instance of a time-specific phenomenon and even though I am absolutely not a style specialist, I suspected that I will be in a position to look at some images ten years from now and mutter to myself, &quotDid we really wear shirts like that? Did women actually put on these weird skirts that are brief in the front, and lengthy in the back? Did absolutely everyone in New York have a tattoo?&quot

An additional example: I am fascinated by the interactions that folks have with their cellphones out on the street. It seems that absolutely everyone has one, which certainly wasn’t correct a decade ago and it seems that everyone walks down the street with their eyes and their entire conscious interest riveted on this tiny box-like gadget, utterly oblivious about anything else that may be going on (among other factors, that tends to make it very effortless for me to photograph them with out their even noticing, particularly if they’ve also got earphones so they can listen to music or carry on a telephone conversation). But I can not support questioning no matter whether this type of social behavior will seem bizarre a decade from now … especially if our cellphones have grow to be so miniaturized that they are incorporated into the glasses we wear, or implanted directly into our eyeballs.

Oh, a single final thing: I’ve developed a customized Google Map to show the precise particulars of every single day’s photo-walk. I will be updating it each and every day, and the most current portion of my each and every-block journey will be marked in red, to differentiate it from all of the older segments of the journey, which will be shown in blue. You can see the map, and peek at it each day to see where I’ve been, by clicking on this hyperlink

URL link to Ed’s each and every-block progress through Manhattan

If you have any suggestions about locations that I ought to absolutely go to to get some excellent photographs, or if you’d like me to photograph you in your little corner of New York City, please let me know. You can send me a Flickr-mail message, or you can e-mail me straight at ed-at-yourdon-dot-com

Keep tuned as the photo-walk continues, block by block …

Starchy, crunchy and flavorful, fried rice is a deeply satisfying dish no matter what you add to it. And you can add just about any vegetable or protein you care to name, fresh or left over.

I adore fried rice not only for its taste and versatility, but also due to the fact it’s so simple to make at the final minute. Shrimp fried rice with pickled radishes MATTHEW MEAD / AP

Major dish

— Shrimp Fried Rice with Pickled Radishes

… 2 eggs
… Kosher salt and ground pepper
… 2 tablespoons vegetable or canola oil, divided
… 1 cup finely chopped yellow onion
… 1/2 pound peeled and deveined raw shrimp
… two garlic cloves, minced
… 2 teaspoons grated fresh ginger
… 3 cups cooked brown rice
… two cups coarsely shredded radishes (about 10 large radishes)
… 2 tablespoons seasoned rice vinegar
… 1 tablespoon low-sodium soy sauce
… 2 tablespoons sake or dry sherry
… 2 teaspoons sesame oil
… 1 cup blanched fresh or thawed frozen peas
… 1 cup blanched sugar snap peas, cut into 1/two-inch pieces

Heat a massive nonstick skillet more than medium-higher. Coat the pan with cooking spray.

In a small bowl, lightly beat the eggs. Add a pinch of salt and some pepper to the eggs, then add them to the pan. Tilt the pan to spread the egg all about to make a flat pancake. Cook for 30 to 45 seconds, or until virtually set. Turn over the egg (you can cut it in a couple of pieces to make it easier, using the side of a nonstick pan-safe spatula) and cook for an additional 10 seconds. Transfer the egg to a cutting board.

Add 1/2 tablespoon of the oil to the pan. Once the oil is hot, add the onion. Lessen the heat to medium and cook, stirring sometimes, until the onion is lightly golden, about 3 to five minutes. Add the shrimp and cook, stirring, till nearly cooked by means of, about another 3 to five minutes. Add the garlic and ginger and cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Transfer the mixture to a bowl and return the skillet to the heat.

Add the remaining 1 1/two tablespoons of oil to the skillet, then add the rice, pressing it flat with the back of the spatula. Cook until the rice is slightly crispy, turning it more than with the spatula, about 8 to ten minutes.

While the rice is cooking, in a modest bowl combine the radishes, vinegar and salt to taste. In a modest bowl combine the soy sauce, sake and sesame oil. Chop the egg and add it along with the peas and sugar snap peas to the bowl with the shrimp.

When the rice is nicely crisped, add the contents of the shrimp bowl and the soy sauce mixture to the skillet and cook, stirring, until the mixture is heated via. Transfer the fried rice to four bowls and prime each and every portion with some of the radishes. Makes four servings.

.

I’ve never been all that great at cooking rice. I just can not seem to get the ratio and timing correct, and I often forget when you’re supposed to leave it alone and when you are supposed to stir it. I finesse this handicap by leaning on a small trick I learned in the course of my restaurant days: boiling the rice in a large pot of salted water as if it was pasta. That way there’s no rice-to-water ratio to worry about. For brown rice, 45 minutes does the trick.

And if you’re in a specific rush, you can swap in instant brown rice, which is nearly as nutritious as typical brown rice and cooks up quicker, as advertised.

This being spring, I made certain that the stars of the recipe have been seasonal ingredients, starting with peas. Fresh peas are heavenly, of course, but they start turning to starch as soon as they’re harvested, so be sure to cook them correct away. I also incorporated two other spring vegetables— sugar snap peas and radishes, even though I left the radishes raw. Saute a radish and this spicy, crispy root vegetable becomes sweet and tender.

But I like the kick of a raw radish, so I basically shredded them, then tossed them with a little seasoned rice vinegar. Sprinkled on best of the finished dish, these raw radishes are similar to a pickle.

Protein-smart, this recipe calls for shrimp, but you can use any protein you choose, or toss in mushrooms instead and call it a vegetarian’s delight.

As is standard in Chinese cuisine, this dish needs small cooking time. But you should have all the components measured and chopped ahead of you toss them in the pan. If you want to streamline the process even further, you can leave out the sauce, simply serving the finished dish with soy sauce and hot sauce on the side. For that matter, you could shed the radish garnish, although even suggesting such a factor tends to make me sad.

In the end, I can pretty significantly assure that if you try this recipe even after, you’ll be inspired to make it again and once again, changing it slightly each and every time to make room for whichever delicious seasonal ingredients take place to be at hand or whichever leftovers are crying out to be employed up.

With so a lot else to concentrate on when students move in and get settled for the college year, safety could be the final factor that Seminoles are considering about. The good news is that FSU currently has a number of measures in location that keep safety on campus.

Incoming students ought to be conscious of the emergency blue light technique, which functions as a signifies of contacting FSUPD for quick help. There are over 400 of these blue light telephones throughout campus, so noting their places is a way to be ready in case of an emergency. In addition, students that give their cell telephone numbers will be in a position to obtain emergency notifications via FSU Alert, and university police offer you a free new service called FSU Guardian—if you sign up, an emergency call from your cell phone would enable FSUPD to have fast access to your information as well as GPS coordinates of your location in order to aid them respond a lot more swiftly.

FSUPD also makes it possible for students to register their personal and useful home on the web in case of theft or loss. Lieutenant Hank Jacob of FSUPD’s Support Solutions Division advises students to record the serial numbers of their valuables. According to Jacob, this data is specially beneficial if house ends up at a pawn shop or advertised on Craigslist. Of course, taking caution with your belongings is critical as nicely.

“A lot of it is typical sense,” Jacob mentioned. “One of the most significant items we get is individuals leaving their stuff around. You can’t anticipate it to be there when you get back. You cannot leave your residence hall unlocked or your vehicle unlocked. You have to do the most you can to safe and safeguard your home.”

Widespread sense also applies to maintaining protected at evening. Students have many evening-time transportation choices. The S.A.F.E. Connection—a project by the Student Government Association in affiliation with FSUPD—offers free transportation to any location on-campus and numerous off-campus places as well. It is available from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. practically every night during the fall, spring, and summer time semesters.

For the duration of the fall and spring, the Night Nole also provides transportation to even much more off-campus locations but does not operate on Sunday or Monday nights. It is made to transport students from the Tennessee Strip to more than 32 apartment complexes.

For those students living in residence halls on campus, University Housing provides Night Staff for security issues that may possibly arise among the hours of 10:30 p.m. and 7:30 a.m. In addition, female students can take a Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) plan that is cost-free if not taken for credit.

There are a lot of approaches to stop crime and keep security whilst at FSU, but students who are conscious of their habits and their surroundings will be capable to reduce their threat even further. Common sense understanding like letting a friend know your whereabouts and not walking alone at night is essential to abide by at college simply because of the unique and riskier atmosphere. It is crucial for incoming students to exercise caution as they adjust to college life.

Finally, Jacob supplied suggestions on how to stay protected and be accountable at FSU.
“Don’t break the law,” Jacob stated. “Don’t drink. Do not do pot. Don’t be so trusting or naïve.”

So we’re supposed to just take our clothing off now? Cool.

My comrades and I jumped out of my Jetta and walked on the dirt beaten path toward the lake. Our initial sight: Chuck from Pensacola, standing in bare flesh with a brewski waving hey.

The Full Moon Skinny Dip is a flyer easily recognizable flyer about campus. A lot of think, very couple of participate. Naturally Tallahassee invites college students every complete moon, of each and every month to indulge in some nude recreation. As a style enthusiast, I consume myself with the most recent trends, textiles, and designers. Obviously, I adore clothes.

What I appreciate most about clothes is the actual textile. My favored is leather. Regardless of whether its pebbled, saffiano, or patent leather, authentic animal hide maintains a caliber that is unmatched to the over popularized poly-cotton blends, most college students are accustomed to it. It’s difficult. It is sturdy. But, it’s restrictive. And no matter how significantly I get pleasure from my leather trousers, what’s even much better than placing it on, is taking it off.

Clothing dictates opinions. They do. That blonde who sits in the front row with her Tory Brunch flats and Michael Kors tote, what do you really know of her? Or that hipster that wears tight skinnies with a graphic tee, what do you actually know of him? Practically nothing. You really think you know a lot more than you do. Clothes protects us, but often restricts our frame of judgment. Shedding cost-free of that restrictive material may enable us to witness a clarity that we wouldn’t usually see. Well, I needed some clarity.

But wait—the closest thing to being “natural” is the Nature Valley bars I snag from the vending machine. I hate the outdoors so considerably my dream home resides in the heart of metropolitan city with the rooftop garden.

I was predictably nervous. Was I going to be hit on? I imply how could they possibly resist themselves. Or at least I’d like to believe that to be the case. But, really possibly, this wasn’t about me, maybe it was some thing deeper than the stereotypical notions we all cling to. “Now you start asking people why and everyone will give you a distinct purpose, higher on most peoples’ list is the freedom of it,” LeValley said. “To me, it is a way of acquiring in touch with ancestral roots. This is the way individuals were for thousands and thousands of years—connected with all of history.”

A frequent guest lecturer at FSU and FAMU, more than a warm fire and s’mores, LeValley, amongst other people, dissected the reason why. Even so, in order to recognize why, I required to recognize how. “Back in the early 80s a whole lot of students got to skinny dipping at [Sam Allen Lake] off Springhill Road. There may have been one hundred students there,” LeValley shared. “Then 1 day the police did a quite stupid point. They raided the spot and arrested seven individuals. One particular of them demanded a jury trial, went to court and won.”

Seriousness overcame everybody standing around the fire. Like a Kanye interview, LeValley had our interest. All that could be heard was the crunch of graham crackers and the crackle of the fire. “The jury stated, ‘well everybody knows that’s a skinny dipping spot. Why are you shocked?’ It became totally unenforceable.”
Soon after getting displaced, the unclad crusaders decided to uncover yet another lake. But again, the police raided that pond and left the nudists…well, naked.

“Then finally 3 of us got to with each other and developed a method of discovering so numerous lakes and sinkholes, and rivers that we could meet in the parking lot Sunday morning and decided then and there which 1 we were going to. We didn’t have to be concerned about the police stalking the place out,” stated LeValley. “So we did that for 4 years. Rob had just joined us and he began looking for some places in this location and he went to a lake. There was an old man fishing and Rob decided to be sincere and tell him what he was looking for.”

Luck struck. That old man fishing had a brother with a lake and for a little rental fee the unclad crusaders had a haven to call their own—equipped with trees, a lake, a hiking trail and campfire. Perseverance created the retreat that I was sitting in the heart of smacking on s’mores and sharing stories.

To my left, stood Monty. A decorated retired pilot, who chose to not reveal his final name, but his purpose for becoming a nudist was simple—he wanted freedom from judgment.

“That’s one particular of the items that I’ve constantly believed was actually stunning about nudism. It destroys the textile classes that our society sets up since I’m not wearing K-Mart and you are not wearing Gucci,” Monty stated. “We’re wearing absolutely nothing.”

As the night aged, in the midst of the rainy weather, I bonded with complete strangers. We swam together in the lake and speak about every thing: Blackboard, tattoos, and careers—normal topics. The water was perfect, as if the temperature was set to stimulate conversation. Even though it was pitch black, the complete moon illuminated their faces. When the mosquitoes decided it was feeding time, I witness the grimaces—a normal expression. I observed as the vets coyly smiled at the rookies’ pain—a typical expression. About the campfire, in amongst light rain showers, we discussed politics, music and sports. Nicely, I didn’t truly participate in the latter.

Throughout the NBA finals, I caught up on Project Runway. Anyhow, I had normal conversation, about regular subjects, with regular men and women.

It produced me wonder why, even though, is not this deemed standard? “I find it interesting that everybody laughs and pokes fun at nudists’ resorts, which is not a sexually factor, however sex with a lot of different folks is so accepted in our society,” Monty mentioned.

“You’re just sitting around with close friends nude and just enjoying the components. I didn’t really feel like it was a brilliant brainchild that I came up with. I just felt like it is a question that begs to be asked, considering that I’ve turn into a nudist.”

Nudity could be subculture, even though it is a issue that connects humans. Clothes is a necessity. Hell, I would be with out a passion with out them but at occasions clothing is somewhat of a required evil.

“When a girl is in clothing, regardless of whether she’s dressed provocatively or just in enterprise garments, there are people that are constantly seeking at your attire to see how you present yourself,” Naturally FSU chapter president Nina Vallad mentioned. “Here you are completely nude, so you don’t have to worry about ‘is this popping out or makes me look fat.’ You’re just here and you are experiencing what it feels like to be entirely stunning. Absolutely everyone is fundamentally accepted at face value.”

Now, did I appear? Yes, at instances possibly also long. Bodies are distinct shapes, shades and sizes. A lot of of these shapes I’ve by no means observed prior to that night. However the hippie weirdo scene I thought I was receiving myself into wasn’t so weird soon after all.

Am I now a self-proclaimed nudist? No and I have the bug bites to prove why.

Nevertheless, at the end of the night, it all of a sudden dawned on me that I was just like them—bare stripped of garments and judgment, yet undoubtedly myself.

My new pal Monty agrees: “You locate that when you’re down to definitely practically nothing but just your physique than you get to know individuals for who they actually are.”
