I initial visited London 40 years ago this month — en route to Paris where I had been invited to give a seminar on the intricacies of designing on-line personal computer systems (which was regarded a big deal in those ancient days of batch mainframe pc systems). I’ve been back once or twice a year, each and every year, given that then so you would think I would have observed each and every nook and cranny of the city by now.

Not so, as it turns out: the vast majority of my London visits have involved a taxi ride from Heathrow to a hotel, conference center, or consulting client followed by a number of days of intense operate, often in a windowless conference area and then a taxi back to Heathrow. More than the years, I’ve managed to see Brighton, Bath, Bournemouth, and Buckingham Palace I’ve walked around the mysterious stones of Stonehenge I’ve driven by way of the meadows of the Cotswolds and I’ve even been up to the Isle of Skye. But there are nonetheless an embarrassingly huge quantity of well-known, historic spots that I have not seen in London so on this most recent trip, I decided I should make a specific effort to see at least a couple of them.

I started with Camden Town, which is situated a couple miles north-northwest of Charing Cross in the center of the city. Like every thing else in London, it has a history: Wikipedia tells us that it got its name from Charles Pratt, the first Earl of Camden, that it was laid out as a residential district in 1791, and that it was located on the London canal network. It has turn out to be a tourist attraction these days, with exotic markets and musical venues.

Camden Higher Street runs by means of the center of all this, and that’s exactly where I spent my time watching people, hunting into shop windows, and photographing everything that looked interesting. It is a quick stretch of one-way street that reminded me a lot of Greenwich Village in New York City: there were hippies everywhere, with tattoos, physique piercings, and wildly-colored dyed hair (green, purple, and chartreuse seemed to be really common), along with low cost t-shirt and clothes shops, Indian and Chinese food outlets, and lots of foreign accents from numerous parts of Europe and Asia.

It took a couple of hours to be sure that I had noticed it all and following 400 photographs, I could inform that I was repeating myself, photographing the very same outlandish hippies that I had photographed an hour earlier. I winnowed out 80% of the photos, and kept 80 that seemed to capture the spirit of the place.

And possessing observed it as soon as, I don’t believe I will need to go back and see it once more if I want to see hippies, it’s a lot less difficult to take the subway down to Greenwich Village. But I am glad I saw it, and I’ll move on next to see what I can locate in Piccadilly Circus.

Next time you tell me to put on 1 of those white t-shirts, I am gonna smack you one…
