Japanese Tattoos

34/366 of my 2012 365 Project. This is a tattoo on my forearm, it is from a japanese painting I located, and it is my favorite Enso. I had the tattoo artist recreate the brush strokes as closely as feasible, as its lack of continuity is portion of its authenticity. Ensō (円相) is a Japanese word meaning &quotcircle&quot and a idea strongly connected with Zen. Ensō is one particular of the most frequent subjects of Japanese calligraphy even although it is a symbol and not a character. It symbolizes absolute enlightenment, strength, elegance, the universe, and the void it can also symbolize the Japanese aesthetic itself. As an &quotexpression of the moment&quot it is usually deemed a kind of minimalist expressionist art.

Japanese Tattoos

I found this adorable Japanese girl operating about the Starlust soon after I parked the eyeball last night, and she was followed by this neko ghost shadow. She told me it was a group gift from neko-kan, and gave me the LM. There are a bunch of group gifts out (group’s 10L to join, but that is not much to get my adorable shadow!), and a group hunt going on for some added bits- which includes the witch hat and neko ears (which you can barely see- they are folded down exactly where human ears are, not perked up). Also lots of adorable floofy lolita skirts to be discovered there, and some good boots, and other assorted neat stuff.

hat/ears/shadow by neko-kan (not simple to locate in search!), skin by Fashionably Dead, hair by Clawtooth, tattoos (2 sets layered) by ~silentsparrow~, feets and tail by Mutation Industries, clothing by Schadenfreude, pose by Imperial Elegance

taken in the &quotrelaxation location&quot at Neko-kan (you’ll have to take a tp on that level of the ship- the shop itself is super adorable as well)

2007-07-27 Lu Tatt Finessed — Duotone Cropped
Japanese Tattoos

A even though back, I did a rough concept painting for a tattoo for a buddy of mine.

Final evening, I got a bee in my bonnet, and decided it was time to do a version that Lu could take to his tattoo artist.

He’s only going to see this tomorrow, but I’d love any responses nevertheless.

In order to make this pic, I searched by means of IMSI’s 202 000 MASTER CLIPS. It is a set of CDs I bought on sale years ago. It is got some of my favourite TIFF pictures on it… stuff culled from the Dover clipart libraries. Old fashioned woodcuts and engravings. Lovely stuff.

Searching by way of, I came across dozens of photos that may well fit the globe Lu was trying to evoke for his arm.

My key criteria in deciding on the pictures had been:

1. The images all need to have to ‘fit’ with each other. They require to really feel as though they’re component of the very same image set.

2. By the finish of the approach, the tattoo design would need to be inkable by a tattoo artist. This also implies that the design and style would need to have to be copyable by the tattoo artist. Most tattoo artists never like to use transfer printers to lay the design and style down on the skin. They like to trace it by hand. This gives them loads of manage, and the capacity to make the artwork their personal.

three. I had to feel comfortable with the photos myself. They need to have to be appeal to my personal aesthetic sense.

So I dragged all of my shortlisted images into CorelDraw ten, exactly where I assembled different rough possibilities, discarding many as they landed on the page.

I lucked on a delicious metal tower, which I squashed down and cleaned up a bit.

The orb mounted on prime of the tower is an old earth globe. The coupling device is the identical orb turned upside down, with the legs utilised as a jewel clip, and the earth portion reduce away.

The arms are from a Japanese print of a samurai warrior. I had to do really a lot of hard surgery to get the arms at the right angle, with the appropriate quantity of muscularity. The one particular on the right had the arm detached from the hand and tilted radically.

The rope extending from the arms comes from a decorative border that I modified slightly. The rope will go all the way about Lu’s bicep. In my actual operating drawing, it really is really lengthy both ways.

The hammer and axe are two separate pictures that I’ve modified to get the lighting appropriate. The tassles on their handles come from a set of curtain tassles on a single of the CDs.

The rays radiating from the earth come from a stylised representation of the sun. I sliced out the smiley face in the centre, and stuck it behind.

And that was just the initial stage!

Subsequent came a complete bunch of me turning the grouped bunch of disparate components into a bitmap (I converted to RGB), in pretty high res, but not overly so. After I’d carried out that, I employed Corel Trace with a entire bunch of modifiers on to simplify the image from the very fussy engraving-style that it had. Then I converted that to a bitmap, messed with it far more, and reconverted it to vector art.

Finally, following all sorts of vector modifications, I was ready to go into the long third phase… Photoshop.

I played and played and played. And then some far more. The playing involved blurring and filtering and layering and blending and painting and erasing and sharpening and blurring and and and and and. The intriguing components for me were the painting and the erasing.

I sent Lu a prior version of this, which was just black ink on skin. But there was something missing. And I couldn’t spot what.

So I played some a lot more. And thanks to a content accident with a blending layer, I discovered myself able to make a red and black duotone. Red and black are two very reliable and durable tattoo inks, so that is why I chose these. I fundamentally wanted to make sure that Lu would have no hassles receiving this tatt interpreted and onto his arm.

If I have been in the marketplace for a tattoo with a tower on it, this would be a version I would be satisfied to have on my arm.

Let’s hope it operates for Lu when he sees it tomorrow morning. And let’s hope even a lot more that his tattoo artist finds it inkable!

This design and style was created on my Toshiba Tecra M4 tablet Computer employing CorelDraw 10 and Photoshop CS2. Snow Patrol and Arcade Fire had been playing all the way via.

If you like this image, you can pop it onto a piece of merchandise at my Flickr-approved Zazzle shop!!!

Just like you will see the occasional tattoo featuring Japanese/Chinese words or parts of words mistaken as words, the which means is not necessarily meant to be completely understood, but the &quotcoolness&quot of it becoming foreign is part of the message. You will see the identical thing with English. This guy’s jacket says, &quotF*** YOU JESUS HOLY GHOST MERCY&quot one thing. It is difficult to get utilised to that. He almost certainly knows it says &quotsomething cool and offensive&quot on his rad jacket–but geez, could you not?
